Contra Dance: Huckleberry Jam with Karen Olsen calling - February 22 2020

Huckleberry Jam: Longtime dance musicians Linda Danielson, fiddle;  Cecily Morris, flute; Art Morris, string bass; and Ruth Anne Fraley, piano. Huckleberry Jam cooks up energetic tune sets mixing traditional and new tunes, including several by members of the band. In addition to playing for contra dance, Linda plays for Irish Ceilidhs and along with Cecily and Ruth Anne, she plays for English and Scottish Country Dancing. Ruth Anne plays accordion for Scandinavian dancing and Linda plays back-up fiddle for the cowgirl band, The Slow Ponies. Cecily and Art were stalwarts in the contradance scene in Juneau, Alaska as both musicians and dancers. Here in Oregon they have played with Mulligatawny and Mad Robin, delighting dancers from Ashland to Astoria. They have enjoyed nine glorious years in Oregon sunshine and will be returning to Alaska soon, so this is their farewell dance. The music and dance community will definitely miss them!!!

Karen Olsen:  Karen has an encyclopedic knowledge of contra dances and is a good teacher and caller. Very patient and clear. She likes to keep the dancers moving, starting out with simpler dances in the beginners lesson, and progressing to more complex dances.  She is also a musician and plays her concertina for dances in Coos Bay. She strives to infuse both her calling and the dancers with her own joyful enthusiasm for  contra dance and music.

Caller will be using non-traditional role terminology (e.g. Larks & Robins).

Potluck will be at 5:30 pm at a contra dancer's home - NOT at the dance venue.
